Anti-inflammatory Medications
Over-the-counter, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) help reduce pain and inflammation in some people. NSAIDS can be found at pharmacies and drug stores and include good old-fashioned aspirin and stronger medications such as ibuprofen (Motrin IB, Advil, etc.) and naproxen sodium (Aleve). While anti-inflammatory medications are in common use today, people with chronic pain should understand that ongoing use of NSAIDS can harm the stomach and kidneys.
Other forms of anti-inflammatory therapy are topical sprays and creams containing analgesics and counterirritants. Over-the-counter products such as Icy Hot, Zostrix and Bengay mask pain by stimulating your sensory receptors. Topical analgesics help reduce inflammation. These methods provide some temporary pain relief. |
